Family Facebook

A couple of years ago, there were a few bloggers featuring a fun way to use and display Scrabble letters beyond the appointed family game night time. Being a lover of words, I saw the idea and made a mental note for when the kids were older.

Time flies, and now the kids are older. The girls are writing and reading everything...or at least trying. They're always journaling, or writng songs, or reading about Justin Bieber's favorite things. Bubba HATES Spelling, HATES homework, and thinks that 5th grade is a conspiracy to steal every last ounce of childhood freedom. And after last week's schedule of regular homework, 6 weeks tests, meeting Accelerated Reading goals, and The Social Studies Project, I'm inclined to agree with him.

Last week I picked up a Scrabble game, found a pretty bowl we weren't using, and set this on the TV chest:

The kids noticed it immediately, but didn't try to change the message.

The next day was Friday, and I posted this:

By the end of the evening, Brooke caught on and the message was changed to this:

The next morning Honey had to work early. And even though he HATES that I call him "Honey" on the blog, he left me this message:

Laci came to town and took pictures of the kids and that evening at dinner, she even got in on the fun.

A week later, the letter holders are hardly every empty. It's become a sort of family status update...using only 20 characters and a maximum of 9 As and 4 Ls. I'm on the look out for another Scrabble game...to gain additional letters...because imagine the status updates if we could use all the Es we wanted!

We have a surprise planned for the kids this weekend. They have no idea it's coming, but I left them a little hint:

That is really fun!! you can often find games at garage sales or thrift stores. Or sometimes you can just find the letters!

So fun! Do you read MarathonBird? She does this but on the table in her entry way with messages like "Welcome" or "Happy Fall" etc. I love the family status idea.

And...you can order more tiles here:

You are so creative! That is a neat idea!

Why doesn't Honey like "honey?" What do you usually call him?
